- Check if the drive is listed in the Device Manager. Open the Device Manager, and check if you can find the drive listed under DVD/CD-ROM drives.
- Check if the drive supports the disc type. Some DVD drives can only play pre-recorded discs, while others can also record on blank discs and play those back.
- Check the port and cables. Make sure the cables inside the case are secure and connected properly to the port.
- Update the driver. The device manager will tell you when the driver is out of date, and allow you to update it.
- Uninstall the driver. Uninstall the device driver from the device manager, and then restart the computer. Upon restart, the Windows should reinstall the driver.
- Check the drive for physical damage. Inspect the front and rear of the optical drive for any damage.
