Why is my laptop not recognizing a new external CD/DVD drive?

  1. Check if another USB device is working on the laptop.
  2. If not, make sure the power cable and USB cable are securely connected to both laptop and the CD/DVD drive.
  3. In the Device Manager on the laptop, find the disk drives option. See if the CD/DVD drive is listed. If not, open ‘Action’ and select 'Scan for hardware changes'.
  4. Check if an updated version of the CD/DVD driver is available from the laptop’s manufacturer’s website and install it.
  5. If the drive is still not recognized, try another USB slot on the laptop or use a USB power adapter.
