Why is my laptop just showing a black screen with a cursor?

1. Verify the power is connected and the laptop is turned on.
2. Check the monitor brightness settings.
3. Reset the monitor settings.
4. Unplug all external devices to determine if one of them is the source of the issue.
5. If the issue persists, reboot the laptop.
6. Verify the laptop is not in Sleep mode.
