Before attempting to insert or delete page numbers in footers, check the followings steps:

1. Check that each page in the document has the same footer design
2. Verify if the footer option is visible in the page layout
3. Make sure the page number field not cross section start
4. Check if page number box is placed inside header/footer
5. Ensure that you are not editing a master document
