Why am I not able to change the primary email address of an Active Directory user?

  1. Verify the correct spelling and format of the email address
  2. Check if there are any existing conflicts with an already existing user (such as an email address with the same username, or a username with the same name as an existing email address)
  3. Check for any group policies in place that may be blocking the ability to change the email address
  4. If possible, check other user properties such as phone number or departmental properties to ensure they are up to date
  5. Ensure that the user has the correct permissions to edit their own email address
