What should I do if I suspect someone is using my identity to open fraudulent accounts?

< 1 min read

If you suspect someone is using your identity, take the following steps:

  1. Alert the appropriate law enforcement authorities and file a report.
  2. Contact each of the three major credit bureaus and request a fraud alert be placed on your accounts.
  3. Request copies of your credit reports and look for any unfamiliar accounts.
  4. Close or freeze any accounts you find that have been opened fraudulently.
  5. Place a fraud victim statement on your credit reports to make it clear you were a victim of identity theft.
  6. Alert your bank and other financial institutions.
