What is SIM swapping and how can I prevent it?

1 min read

SIM swapping (also know as SIM hijacking) is an identity theft technique used by attackers to gain access to a victim’s mobile device and online accounts. Below are a few steps you can take to protect yourself from SIM swap attacks:

  1. Enable 2-Step Authentication (2FA): Utilizing two-factor authentication (2FA) with your online accounts adds an extra layer of security, as any attempt to access the account would require both the password and physical access to your device.

  2. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Multi-factor authentication (MFA) requires multiple steps to authenticate your identity. For example, if your phone is compromised, the attacker would need your security credentials (e.g. password, PIN) in addition to physical access to your device.

  3. Monitor Account Activity: Regularly check your account activity to ensure no unauthorized changes or activities have occurred.

  4. Set Up Find My Phone Feature: Enable Find My Phone feature for your device so you can locate your phone if it is ever lost or stolen. Most smartphones have this feature built in now, so you can easily turn it on in your settings.

  5. Lock Devices: Always remember to lock your device when you are not using it. You can also set up the auto-lock feature on your device to help keep your device secure.
