What is ransomware and how can I prevent it?

< 1 min read

Ransomware is malicious software intended to extort money or assets from people by blocking access to their files. It is usually done by encrypting the users’ files, and the hacker will demand payment in exchange for the decryption key. Prevention is key to avoiding ransomware, and users should deploy the following strategies:

  1. Ensure all computer systems are up to date and patched.

  2. Ensure anti-virus and firewall protections are active.

  3. Update your software often.

  4. Back-up your computer regularly and store it in an offsite location.

  5. Be aware of phishing emails and other social engineering tactics used in cyber-attacks.

  6. Limit user privileges and access rights.

  7. Enforce use of strong passwords.

  8. Avoid clicking on links, downloading attachments, or opening email from unknown sources.
