What are the security implications of using free public charging stations?

< 1 min read

It is important to take caution when using free public charging stations for a variety of reasons, such as:

  1. Malware and malicious software may be embedded in the charging station and infect your device.
  2. Your device may be vulnerable to data interception.
  3. Electrical shock from a faulty charging station is a possibility.
  4. The charging station may be heating up your device (due to wrong voltage)
  5. You may be liable in case of damages.

It is therefore recommended to take the following steps when using free public charging stations:

  1. Do not leave your device unattended when using a charging station.
  2. Be sure the charging station is genuine and not tampered with.
  3. Be aware if a stranger is offering to assist with charging your device.
  4. Do not overcharge your device. If your device is already fully charged, disconnect the power source.
  5. Disconnect the power source before you physically disconnect your device.
