How do I set up port forwarding?

< 1 min read

  1. Identify the device you are trying to forward – Do some research to find the make and model of the device you want to specifically forward the port for so you can properly configure the port forwarding.

  2. Verify that the correct ports are open – Check that all of the ports and protocol (TCP or UDP, and both if unspecified) are properly defined.

  3. Set up a static address for the device – If necessary, assign a static IP address to the device you are forwarding ports, and create a robust name for the device.

  4. Log into the port forwarding administration panel of your router – Open your browser, type in the IP address of your router, and log into the router with the username and password that you should have.

  5. Find the port forwarding section of the administration panel – Locate the port forwarding section for your device. Port forwarding instructions are typically found under the Security menu.

  6. Enable port forwarding – Activate port forwarding for the device you just assigned a static IP address to, and the ports you identified earlier. Most routers will achieve this by simply entering the information defined above.
