- Identify the device you are trying to forward – Do some research to find the make and model of the device you want to specifically forward the port for so you can properly configure the port forwarding.
- Verify that the correct ports are open – Check that all of the ports and protocol (TCP or UDP, and both if unspecified) are properly defined.
- Set up a static address for the device – If necessary, assign a static IP address to the device you are forwarding ports, and create a robust name for the device.
- Log into the port forwarding administration panel of your router – Open your browser, type in the IP address of your router, and log into the router with the username and password that you should have.
- Find the port forwarding section of the administration panel – Locate the port forwarding section for your device. Port forwarding instructions are typically found under the Security menu.
- Enable port forwarding – Activate port forwarding for the device you just assigned a static IP address to, and the ports you identified earlier. Most routers will achieve this by simply entering the information defined above.
