What steps should I take if my personal information has been exposed in a data breach?

  1. Monitor your financial accounts often and closely for fraud or suspicious activity.

  2. Consider obtaining a credit report from a major credit bureau.

  3. Check your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements for errors or evidence of fraudulent activity.

  4. Contact your health insurer if your policy information and/or Social Security number (SSN) was compromised by the data breach.

  5. Request a fraud alert or credit freeze on your credit reports to block access to your information.

  6. File your taxes early as soon as you have the tax information you need and make sure to keep a copy of your filed taxes.

  7. Call the fraud department of one of the three major credit reporting agencies if you notice unfamiliar or suspicious activity on your credit report.

  8. Be vigilant in reviewing credit reports and bank statements for unusual or unauthorized activity.
