What should I do if I receive a threatening or malicious email or message?

< 1 min read

It is important to take malicious emails and messages seriously. If you receive a worrying message you should:

  1. Do not respond – Even if the message claims to be from a trusted source, do not click any links or reply to it in any way.
  2. Check the sender email address – Be aware of poorly written emails, typos or unusual symbols, as well as requests for personal information that seem out of the ordinary. Check that the sender email address is from the organisation they claim to be from.
  3. Verify the legitimacy of the organisation first – If you are not sure about the legitimacy of the organisation, find the official address of the website and contact them directly using the contact information on their website.
  4. Report it – If you have received a concerning email or message, report it to the authorities or your IT department.
