If you receive a suspicious email or text from a friend or family member, do the following to protect yourself and your data:
Check the email address/phone number. Scammers often use slight variations to make it look like someone you know.
Verify the identity of the sender. A legitimate email or text from the person in question should contain information that only they would typically know.
Hover over links before clicking. If the link is suspicious, do not click on it.
Don’t give away personal information. Confidential data, such as credit card numbers, passwords, or social security numbers, should never be shared over email or text.
Delete the message and then contact the person in question directly to confirm it’s authenticity. If you have any doubt, report the message to your email provider.
