What is ransomware and how can I protect my files from it?

< 1 min read

Ransomware is malicious software designed to block access to, or delete data from a device until a ransom is paid. To protect yourself from ransomware, it is recommended to:

  1. Regularly back up data: This includes both on-site backups to external storage devices and using cloud-based storage services to create remote backups.
  2. Make sure all systems and software are always up-to-date: Unpatched and outdated products may have security flaws which can be exploited.
  3. Only visit reputable websites and download applications from trusted sources.
  4. Think twice before opening emails and documents from unknown senders: An attached document file could contain malicious code.
  5. Use anti-virus and malware protection: This helps detect any malicious software and stop it from executing its payload.
  6. Know what network and devices are connected and block unauthorised access: Ensure your network is configured and secure.
