What is metadata and can it be used to compromise my security?

< 1 min read

Metadata is a set of data that describes and gives information about other data and is used to make finding and managing information easier. Often associated with information security, metadata can be used to learn more about you and your activities, and could potentially reveal confidential or sensitive information that may compromise your security.

  1. Ensure the security of all your devices by updating software and passwords on a regular basis.
  2. Set security layers around your devices, such as strong passwords and two-factor authentication.
  3. Take extra caution when dealing with sensitive information such as credit card numbers and remember to encrypt when possible.
  4. Be aware of what type of information your devices are collecting and be sure to delete it when necessary.
  5. Be conscious of what you are sharing on social media sites and be aware of what associated metadata will be attached to the data.
