What is malware and how can I avoid it?

< 1 min read

Malware is malicious software used to damage, interfere with, or gain access to a computer system. It can be in the form of computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, ransomware, spyware, adware, and other malicious programs. To help reduce the chances of becoming a victim of malware, it is best to follow these steps:

  1. Keep security software updated – having the most up-to-date security software, web browser, and operating system is the best defense against viruses, malware, and other online threats.

  2. Be careful what you download – only download software from sites you know and trust and never open an attachment or click on a link from someone you don't know.

  3. Protect your passwords – use unique passwords for each of your online accounts and keep them private.

  4. Be aware of phishing – be suspicious of any email, text, or pop-up message or website asking for personal or financial information.

  5. Secure your mobile device – keep your phone, tablet, or laptop up to date, install security apps, and use a passcode.
