Is it safe to click on links shared through social media?

< 1 min read

It is always important to be cautious when clicking links shared through social media. We suggest taking the following steps to ensure your safety:

  1. Look for signs that the link may be untrustworthy. Is the website or link spoofing a legitimate URL (e.g. www.wikipedia.org vs. www.wikepediaa.com)?
  2. If the link shares sensitive information, or causes you to enter personal information, make sure the website is secure. Look for HTTPS and SSL secure padlock symbols in the URL bar.
  3. Try to research the link. Before clicking a link, look for others who have also posted or tried the link, or try to research comments about it online. If it looks suspicious or too good to be true, it usually is.
  4. Be vigilant with any link that takes you away from the social media app or website. Whether it is an email, SMS, or a link from a website, be certain that you trust the sender and the information is safe before clicking through.
